So get this. A Danish film. With Danish-speaking actors. Practically all the action takes place on the phone. The main storyline — and all the scenes, really — revolve around this one guy, at a desk. In front of a computer. And did we mention it’s in Danish?
Needless to say, you would be laughed out of every boardroom in Hollywood with that kind of movie pitch. And yet, this edgy thriller about a troubled police officer working at the emergency desk almost has a Hitchcock feel to it, and will leave you riveted, captivated and, at one particular point, gasping out loud.
Proof once again that great movies don’t require extravagant budgets, bankable movie stars, Dolby 7.1 sound, CGI — or English for that matter.
After the slew of awards it’s received — including at Sundance as well as being the Danish submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars — you can bet Hollywood will try to remake this one.
Actually, they are, with Jake Gyllenhaal in the title role.
Figures.
Well, at least it’s not Tom Cruise.
